ST. JOHN’S IS GOING PAPERLESS!

Beginning July 1, 2009, St. John’s will be making a conscious effort to be good stewards of the gifts God has given to us.  Paper, styrofoam, and throw away plastic products will no longer be provided for use in our facility.  Hopefully, this will be a relatively simple change since we have all the dishes, cups, etc. in the kitchen and have the dishwasher to make clean-up easy. It takes over 500 years for a Styrofoam cup to disintegrate, so our landfills are going to overflow fast if this usage is not curtailed.  Please realize that taking care of our planet and God’s gifts to us is not an easy task, but one we should all undertake.

PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS the family and friends of Thomas Jackson, Sr., Robert Hecker and Ruth Joan Holder  May our Lord grant Tom, Bob and Joan them eternal rest.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who shared their time, talents and treasures for the funeral dinners.  Hopefully we won’t have you call you again for a while.  The families really do appreciate your generosity.  This is such a great ministry for our parish.

First Communion: This weekend and next those who have been preparing for First Communion will be at the 5:00 Mass April 25 and 10:30 Masses April 26 & May 3 to celebrate First Communion with our parish community. Pray for them and welcome them.

Confirmation: Saturday May 2 at the 5:00 Mass our Confirmation candidates will be confirmed by Bishop Schnurr. Please join them as they confirm their baptism in the presence of our parish community.

Conversing with God in Scripture: A Contemporary Approach to Lectio Divino is a workshop offered to parishioners here at St. John the Baptist, May 7th, 7-9:00 pm. The cost is $15.00. Please contact Dan Thomas (667-3419, ext. 203 or thomsdan@woh.rr.com) if you are interested.

Liturgical Bits & Bytes

EASTER - ALLELUIA

St. Augustine says: "We are Easter people; Alleluia is our song."  Alleluia is one of those words that needs to be sung. We'll sing it over and over again this Easter season. What exactly does it mean?  Literally, the word is a short form for the sentence: "God's people praise God!" But it's one of those words that defies translation, like "Hooray!" Even the instructions in our liturgical books say that if the Alleluia cannot be sung, it should be omitted.  So whether the liturgy is celebrated in a cathedral or a catacomb, "Alleluia" is our song.

ST. JOHN’S FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET will be accepting donations following the Tipp City Community Garage Sale on 2 May.  The St John’s garage will be open 2 May from 4:00 – 8:00 for parishioners to drop off their garage sale leftovers.  All other donations will be accepted the week of 5 July, during Flea Market set-up.  Please: no clothes, TVs, or computers.  Call Christine Sauls, 667-7182, if you have questions.  Thank you!

Thank you to all supporters of the 2009 Catholic Ministries Appeal.  Our parish has raised $12,860.00 from 142 households, reaching 84.94% of our parish goal of $15,140.00.  If you have not yet pledged, please consider a gift today and help us meet our goal.  Please remember to make your pledge now even if you plan on fulfilling that pledge towards the end of the year.  You can pick up information with pledge forms in the Narthex pamphlet rack to be mailed in, or for more information please visit www.catholicappeal.info,  Every gift matters.  Thank you!

The State Department estimates that nearly 5 million people have been displaced, forced to leave their homes, because of the war in Iraq.  The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports resettlement service for refugees, serves victims of human trafficking, and provides pastoral care and advocacy.  Of the 50,000 total refugees authorized to enter the United States in 2007, nearly one-third were helped by USCCB Migration and Refugee Services, one organization receiving funds from the Collection.  The Collection also supports legal services for refugees, advocacy, relief and development, and disaster/emergency relief.  When you donate to the Catholic Relief Services Collection, you give hope.  Please be generous in today’s collection.

April is Donate Life Month  - Are you an Organ and Tissue Donor?  If not, have you ever thought of becoming one?  April is Donate Life Month.   Thousands of Americans are in need of vital organs and tissues. For many, the chance to live a full life won’t come unless more of us consider organ, eye and tissue donation. Each one of us has the potential to save up to eight lives as an organ donor and touch another fifty as a tissue donor. To learn how to document your decision to become a donor, go today to www.donatelife.net.
