CHURCH BELL & NEW BELL TOWER

We blessed and dedicated our historical church bell [cast in 1866] and new bell tower before the 5:00 pm Mass on the Eve of Mary, Mother of God – December 31, 2008.  We will be adding a cross on the top of the tower, a plaque and attractive landscaping in the next few months.  The bell will ring each day on the hour from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm, 5 minutes before each Sunday and Holy Day Mass and at Mass time, ring the Angelus at 12:00 noon & 6:00 pm, toll at funerals and peal at weddings.  Many thanks to all those who volunteered countless hours to help build the tower and to all those who were so generous in financing the cost of the tower and restoration of the bell!

CHRISTIAN UNITY OCTAVE

Sunday, January 18 through Sunday, January 25 is the annual Christian Unity Octave.  This 8 day period each year is to pray for unity among all Christians.  The Octave concludes with the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul.

FEAST OF THE CONVERSION OF SAINT PAUL

Because this is the Year of Saint Paul [2008-June 29-2009] the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul [January 25] will be celebrated at our weekend Masses January 24-25.

Dear St. John’s Family,

My family and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the bereavement committee as well as the countless people who prepared food for us after the funeral services for Norma Albers on Saturday, January 3, 2009. The food was delicious, but most importantly it provided us the opportunity to gather together and share memories of our wonderful mother.

Our heartfelt gratitude,

The family of Norma Albers

They will begin doing dismissal after the Liturgy of the Word from now on. Each Sunday after the Prayer of the Faithful they will leave the Liturgy for the breaking open of that Sunday’s scriptures. Please keep them in your prayers.

Confirmation 2008-09: The Confirmation candidates will be coming before the parish Feb.1 to celebrate their readiness for the sacrament of Confirmation. Please remember them in your prayers. There next large group session is Feb. 8 for a presentation on “Faith and Prayer” by Fr. Mike Lisbeth, S.M. and Bro Mike O’Grady, S.M.

Liturgical Bits & Bytes:

Dismissal - The last thing is the dismissal.  Sometimes it sounds like,  “Go in peace, the mass is ended.” This is a bit odd sounding when we respond, “Thanks be to God.” However, the original is “Ite, Missa est.” or “Go, it is the Mass.”   This is the phrase from which we get the term “mass” to refer to our celebration. That final dismissal is actually a “being sent forth.”  One of the best forms of this dismissal is, “Go in peace to love and serve God and one another.”   This probably comes the closest to what the dismissal is supposed to do—give us the mission to go out into the world to live God’s good news and to spread it through our actions.

ONE ROSE, ONE LIFE CAMPAIGN - Representatives for Miami County Right to Life will be acceptng donations for the One Rose, One Life Campaign this weekend after all the Masses. All proceeds go to support their pro-life efforts. Please be generous. Thank you.
