The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA), formerly the Archdiocesan Annual Fund Drive, is an annual effort by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to spread the Gospel through informing and engaging the faithful with important regional ministries that benefit thousands of people throughout nineteen counties in western and southwestern Ohio. We invite you to share your gifts of time, talent, and treasure to participate in the life of our local church through these ministries.

College Campus Ministries – Do gratitude for the next generation by supporting the work of Catholic chaplains working on college campuses.  With your gift to the CMA, you offer opportunities for faith, fellowship, and mission to more than 75,000 students at four area public institutions.

FESTIVAL NEWS – Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 4th in room #107.  Anyone interested in helping with the festival is welcome and encouraged to come to the meeting.  It is a great way to learn new people in the parish.

OPERATION RICE BOWL – Today in Mark’s Gospel, we find Peter, James and John being disturbed hearing Jesus talk about carrying a cross and losing his life.  In answer to their misgivings, Jesus took them up to a mountain and was transfigured before them.  They were filled with awe as they realized his glory was also theirs, a glory not experienced in his future kingdom, but also here on earth.

As we continue our Operation Rice Bowl journey let us remember in prayer that as a community of faith, we have the obligation to reach out to those most in need.  The Gospel specifically calls us to take action on behalf of the most vulnerable members of society.  May our fasting, move us to action on behalf of the poor.  May our almsgiving assist Catholic Relief Services as we learn about agriculture programs in the Philippines.

LEARN HOW TO MAKE UKRAINIAN EGGS (PYSANKY) - Ukrainian Eggs are intricately designed eggs, decorated by the traditional wax and dye method.  All basic materials will be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to order supplies to continue working at home. There will be 4 sessions on Monday evenings through March (Mar. 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd) from 6:30 to 9:00PM in the Banquet Hall. Come to as many of the sessions as you wish. The basic instruction will be given during the first session, with the other 3 sessions free for the students to work at their own pace, and perhaps explore some advanced techniques.

Children are welcome, but those under 12 should be accompanied by an adult as we will be using lit candles and permanent dye.  Wear old clothes. Bring an empty egg carton with you to transport your creations back home safely.  If you would like to attend, please call the Parish office to register so we have some idea of the supplies that will be needed. There is no cost to attend. For more information call Barb Deschapelles at 339-9305.

BABY BOTTLE PROJECT - The baby bottles that were passed out at all the Masses last November are to collect loose change/cash/checks for the Under Five Feeding Program in Nairobi that our Parish has committed to support. Please consider keeping the bottles and using them as a "bank" to save your donations. When the bottle is full, it can be emptied in the Nairobi basket by the Baptismal Font. Keep the bottle and refill it. If you have turned in your bottle, please consider taking another one. There are extra bottles in the basket in the Gathering Area. This is an ongoing program and St. Johns is the main outside source of income for it. Without our donations many children would be underfed or not fed at all. Your support is needed and greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Travel Opportunity for St John Parishioners.  The Seniors Group at our sister parish, St Christopher's in Vandalia, has extended an invitation to any and all members of St John the Baptist Parish to join them in their travel plans for 2009!  They have two major trips planned.  The first is called Exploring the Alpine Countries:  Austria, Germany and Switzerland.  The dates for that trip are April 16 - 28, 2009.  The second trip is called Pacific Northwest & California.  It features Washington, Oregon and California and occurs August 3 - 12, 2009.  If you are interested or would like additional information, contact Beverly Kaser at 898-1939.  A limited number of descriptive brochures for each of these trips are also available in the pamphlet rack in the narthex.

RCIA: On Sunday, March 1, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati will celebrate the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion.  The Rite of Election is celebrated with those seeking to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, and the Call to Continuing Conversion is celebrated with those seeking Reception into the Full Communion of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as Catholics who are completing their initiation through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. This season of the Church year is dedicated in a particular way to the final preparation period of these men, women, and children seeking to celebrate the sacraments of initiation at Easter.

The term “election” refers to the fact that God has chosen these catechumens for membership into Christ’s Body. During this public celebration, the Church judges their readiness and affirms their intention to advance toward the Easter Sacraments.

1,125 catechumens and candidates will come from parishes all around the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for this Archdiocesan celebration.  This gathering is one way in which the local ordinary (bishop) can be involved in the initiation process of the many men, women and children who seek to be members of the Roman Catholic Church.  Also, it is an opportunity for these individuals who have been involved in the initiation process to experience a sense of being incorporated into the larger Roman Catholic community.

This year there will be four celebrations to take place at the following times and places on Sunday, March 1, 3:30 P.M. and 7:30 P.M, the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains, Coadjutor Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr, presiding 3:30 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Dayton, Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk, presiding

Our catechumens, Lauryl Firman and Jeff and Keri Haney, and candidates, Brandye Genereux and Christie Peters will be sent forth by our parish community to this Rite of Election at this Sunday’s 10:30 Mass. Please keep them in your prayers.

Liturgical Bits & Bytes:

BAPTISTRY

Baptism is the first and most important step on our journey into the life we have in Christ.  Each time we come into church, we should be reminded in some way that it was through the sacrament of baptism that we became part of God's family.  For this reason, the preferred place for the baptisty is at the entrance to the church building. Each time you come into the church building, dip your hand into the holy water of life. The whole point of blessing ourselves as we come into the church has always been to remind ourselves of the life we share through baptism. Often Sunday celebrations use the symbol of sprinkling of holy water as part of the gathering rite. This, too, is a reminder of our baptism and the common promises we made.

Great idea!  How ‘bout cash for creativity?  ISPD has $180 for the three best ideas for a new parish website home page.   Particulars are at  http://www.stjohnthebaptist.cc.  Responses needed NLT 3/23.
