ST. JOHN’S IS GOING PAPERLESS!

Beginning July 1, 2009, St. John’s will be making a conscious effort to be good stewards of the gifts God has given to us.  Paper, styrofoam, and throw away plastic products will no longer be provided for use in our facility.  Hopefully, this will be a simple change since we have all the dishes, cups, etc. in the kitchen and have the dishwasher to make clean-up easy.  From a landfill perspective, each year almost 18,433,799,281 cubic feet of trash is created.  If you made the pile 400 feet deep (as tall as a 40 story building), it would cover more than 1000 acres of land.  Let us all be proactive in protecting our God given resources and use them wisely.

Candle Sales This Weekend – YNIA - The Young Neighbors In Action youth group will be selling scented candles after each mass this weekend.  All proceeds will help to fund their mission trip to San Francisco in July.  These candles would make for a great Mother's Day gift!

MISSIONARY COOPERATION PLAN [MCP]

Each year every parish in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is assigned a missionary group to support.  This year we have been assigned the Diocese of Puerto Escandido.  The weekend of May 30-31 Father Jaime Rojas representing the Diocese of Puerto Escandido will preach at all our Masses.  The second collection that weekend will go to support that Diocese.  Please make out all checks to: St. John the Baptist Church.  We will send one parish check to support this missionary effort.

The Neon Movie Theater in Downtown Dayton is showing THEY KILLED SISTER DOROTHY from May 1 - 7, 2009.  On February 12, 2005, Sister Dorothy Stang  a Catholic nun from Dayton, Ohio - was shot 6 times and left to die on a muddy road deep in the Amazon.   Her murder shocked the world and revealed a sordid battle in the Brazilian rainforest.   THEY KILLED SISTER DOROTHY is the powerful, new documentary that has been winning awards around the world.  The film received its local premiere at the Dayton Art Institute in late March with many members of the Stang family in attendance.   The response was enthusiastic, and it was determined that the film needed a longer run in Dayton.

SEEDS OF KNOWLEDGEAnd some seed fell on good soil, and when it grew, it produced fruit and hundredfold.” After saying this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear.”  Luke 8:8  It takes a lot of time, effort, swart, and patience to grow a garden.  Like a garden, we’re called by baptism to produce.  Plant the seed of knowledge.  The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is alive with stories each and every day: stories you won’t find on the local television station or local newspaper.  Celebrate those stories by subscribing to your Archdiocesan newspaper.  The Catholic Telegraph is a great learning tool and has been for over 175 years.  Support your parish’s Adult Faith Formation program with The Catholic Telegraph!  The cost is less than 50-cents each week.  You’ll get 51 issues for just $24.00.  Order your subscription today and call (513) 421-3131!
