HOME EUCHARIST

If you are unable to attend mass this week and would like to receive the Eucharist, call the Parish Office at 667-3419 before 3:30 on Friday or call Ann Fallert @ 667-3416 or Lavonne Fleming @ 667-7313 on Saturday and arrangements will be made for home communion.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with those serving our country at this time and with their loved ones at home.  We pray for a safe homecoming and that the world may one day be at peace.

NOTICE – We will not be taking intentions for daily or Sunday mass until further notice.  We have had an unusual number of deaths this year and the mass intentions are more than Father can fulfill this year.  We will only take mass intentions for members of the parish that have passed away recently.

ANNUAL OCTOBER COUNT

Each year every parish counts its Sunday Mass attendance during the month of October and reports the results to the Archdiocese.  We averaged 662 people attending Mass on the four weekends of October.  We averaged 198 at the 5:00 pm Saturday Mass, 158 at the 8:00 am Sunday Mass and 296 at the 10:30 am Sunday Mass.  Our high weekend attendance was 732 on October 4-5.  Our low weekend attendance was 615 on October 25-26.  Our church holds approximately 450 people.

ARCHBISHOP DENNIS M. SCHNURR

On October 17, 2008 the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, appointed Bishop Dennis M. Schnurr, till now Bishop of Duluth, Minnesota to be Coadjutor Archbishop of Cincinnati.  He will assist Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk until he retires sometime in 2009 when he reaches age 75.  Archbishop Schnurr will then become the Archbishop of Cincinnati.  Welcome Archbishop Schnurr!

RCIA: This past week’s session will be moved to Sunday evening to take in Fr. Ken Overberg’s presentation. This Monday will be discussing Scripture.

How Would Jesus Vote was a presentation by Fr. Ken Overberg, a Jesuit priest from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He began by stating that the topic as written was a trick question because Jesus lived in a society that couldn’t vote. A more accurate way of stating the question considered would be “how would the faithful follower of Jesus vote?”

In dealing with the issue of conscience he began with the belief of the Catholic Church that it is really possible to come to an understanding of the truth. Conscience is the process by which we do this and we are in a life-long process of forming that conscience. This process is a search for truth, based on reality which is discovered through reality-revealing questions and the wisdom sources (scripture, tradition and expertise) of our tradition interspersed with Prayer.

Important themes of Catholic social teaching to consider are human dignity, our solidarity with one another as a human race, bringing justice to our world and the common good.

BABYSITTING: we have been trying for several months to get a coordinator and volunteers to continue offering babysitting at the 10:30 Mass. No one has come forward so we will no longer offer it. If there is interest and volunteers in the future we will resume. Please contact Dan Thomas if you have questions or suggestions at 667-3419 or thomasdan@woh.rr.com or in person.

October 2008 Synod of Bishops

The Synod of Bishops is meeting in Rome the past few weeks, and is discussing ways to promote the prayerful reading, understanding, and proclamation of the Word of God.

Among the English speaking prelates who received appointments and representing the United States are Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Bishop Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, USCCB vice president, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Houston and Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington. This past week the synod was voting on 53 propositions to be sent to the Pope. Among the suggestions to Pope Benedict was one that he write a personal blog that could be read by all.

ST. JOHN CHOIRS PRODUCE CD - As part of the celebration of St. John's 150th anniversary, the choirs have produced a CD of music selections which should appeal to all.  This memento souvenir recording is available in the parish office.  A suggested donation of $10.00 is asked.  We appreciate your support of the St. John's Choirs.
