PARISH OFFICE CLOSED MONDAY, OCTOBER 13TH

HOME EUCHARIST

If you are unable to attend mass this week and would like to receive the Eucharist, call the Parish Office at 667-3419 before 3:30 on Friday or call Ann Fallert @ 667-3416 or Lavonne Fleming @ 667-7313 on Saturday and arrangements will be made for home communion.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with those serving our country at this time and with their loved ones at home.  We pray for a safe homecoming and that the world may one day be at peace.

NOTICE – We will not be taking intentions for daily or Sunday mass until further notice.  We have had an unusual number of deaths this year and the mass intentions are more than Father can fulfill this year.  We will only take mass intentions for members of the parish that have passed away recently.

2ND COLLECTION FOR PHASE II BUILDING PROJECT

Today’s second collection will be taken for pledges and other donations to our Phase II Building Project.

ONE SUNDAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD - Next Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI calls every Catholic in the world to celebrate our vocation to be missionary.  It’s World Mission Sunday!

As Catholics around the world – here at home and in the Missions – gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, we are to pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work.  We pray for those awaiting the “Good News” of our Lord’s great love for us and for the missionaries who offer the poor and suffering the light of Christ.  And we are to offer financial help through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.

Needy Basket News...Thank you, Thank you... to the most generous people--St. John the Baptist Catholic Church!!!

We collected almost 900# of food for the Needy Basket this past weekend. We are most appreciative.

40 DAYS OF LIFE – Christians throughout Dayton are taking part in a national 40 Days for Life effort, from September 24 through November 2.  This is a continuation of the 40 Days for Life our parish participated in this past January.

We are again looking for volunteers to provide a peaceful presence outside the Women’s Medical Center Abortion Facility, 1401 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, OH, for one or more hours during the 40 days.  Sunday, October 26th has been designated as St. John the Baptist Day and we will be scheduling individuals form our parish for that day.  40 Days for Life provides us with an opportunity to put into action our belif that all life must be respected.

Please contact Judie McKitrick (339-9355) if you are interested in volunteering.  All volunteers are asked to sign a “Statement of Peace” which will be provided to you.  To get additional information on this pro-life event, you can go to:  www.40daysfor life.com.

RCIA UPDATE - Jeanne Fairbanks was our guest speaker for the evening on the topic of Social Teaching/Social Justice.  We talked about what comes to your mind when you hear Catholic Social Teaching…beliefs, relationships with others, teaching, parts of the church and justice.   We also shared what we thought about when someone asked us about Social Justice…human rights, individual rights, community rights, unborn.  We realized that the social teachings of the Church and social justice issues of our world should be interchangeable.  The same things we are taught as a Catholic are the same fundamental teachings of people living in any community.  But how do we reconcile those teachings with the world we live in today?  It's not too late to join us.  We've change our meeting night to Mondays at 7:00pm.  Contact Dan Thomas in the parish office to register.

How Would Jesus Vote, is a presentation by Fr. Ken Overberg, a Jesuit priest from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He will be reflecting on the U.S. Bishops’ document entitled Faithful Citizenship. Here is a quote from that document:

#5 This statement highlights the role of the Church in the formation of conscience, and the corresponding moral responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive, and act upon the Church’s teaching in the lifelong task of forming his or her own conscience. With this foundation, Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms, and candidates’ promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world.

Fr. Overberg will be speaking here at St. John on Oct. 26, 6:00-8:00 PM on the principles that we can use in our decisions on voting. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Reflections on the Liturgy: Communion Song

During communion a song is sung.  This should be easy or repetitive or familiar enough to not require using the songbooks.  The song is to emphasize the unity (communion) of the people with one another as well as with Christ. The text should be one which highlights that aspect of relationship.

 Adult Faith Formation Coming Attractions:

  • Fr. Overberg will be speaking here at St. John on Oct. 26, 6:00-8:00 PM.
