HOME EUCHARIST

If you are unable to attend mass this week and would like to receive the Eucharist, call the Parish Office at 667-3419 before 3:30 on Friday or call Ann Fallert @ 667-3416 or Lavonne Fleming @ 667-7313 on Saturday and arrangements will be made for home communion.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with those serving our country at this time and with their loved ones at home.  We pray for a safe homecoming and that the world may one day be at peace.

NOTICE – We will not be taking intentions for daily or Sunday mass until further notice.  We have had an unusual number of deaths this year and the mass intentions are more than Father can fulfill this year.  We will only take mass intentions for members of the parish that have passed away recently.

COMMEMORATION PRAYER SERVICE-SUNDAY, NOVEMBE 2

An evening prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. to remember the members of our parish who have died over the last year.  We would also like to remember relatives (parents, children, brother and sisters) of parishioners who have died since last November 2007.  A votive candle will be given to each family of the person remembered during this service.  If you would like to have your close relative remembered, please call the Parish Office by October 28th with their name, your relation, date of death and where they were from.  This will be a beautiful prayer service to remember our loved ones.

There will be a book in the back of church for anyone to put names of deceased loved ones, friends or anyone that should be remembered on the Feast of all Souls.

PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS the family and friends of Jerry Yantis who died recently.  May our Lord grant Jerry eternal rest.

40 DAYS OF LIFE – Christians throughout Dayton are taking part in a national 40 Days for Life effort, from September 24 through November 2.  This is a continuation of the 40 Days for Life our parish participated in this past January.

We are again looking for volunteers to provide a peaceful presence outside the Women’s Medical Center Abortion Facility, 1401 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, OH, for one or more hours during the 40 days.  Sunday, October 26th has been designated as St. John the Baptist Day and we will be scheduling individuals form our parish for that day.  40 Days for Life provides us with an opportunity to put into action our belif that all life must be respected.

Please contact Judie McKitrick (339-9355) if you are interested in volunteering.  All volunteers are asked to sign a “Statement of Peace” which will be provided to you.  To get additional information on this pro-life event, you can go to:  www.40daysfor life.com.

RCIA UPDATE - Jeanne Fairbanks was our guest speaker for the evening on the topic of Social Teaching/Social Justice.  We talked about what comes to your mind when you hear Catholic Social Teaching…beliefs, relationships with others, teaching, parts of the church and justice.   We also shared what we thought about when someone asked us about Social Justice…human rights, individual rights, community rights, unborn.  We realized that the social teachings of the Church and social justice issues of our world should be interchangeable.  The same things we are taught as a Catholic are the same fundamental teachings of people living in any community.  But how do we reconcile those teachings with the world we live in today?  It's not too late to join us.  We've change our meeting night to Mondays at 7:00pm.  Contact Dan Thomas in the parish office to register.

Stages of Spiritual Growth:  Saturday November 15th

Wondering where you are on the spiritual journey?  Curious about how to go deeper with God?   Mark your calendar for the morning of Saturday, November 15th and attend this adult ed program that will explore stages of spiritual growth and assist you in locating where you are and how to go deeper with God.  Watch for more information in upcoming bulletins!

RCIA: We took a one week respite this last Monday and will resume this Monday with an exploration of the Mass.

How Would Jesus Vote, is a presentation by Fr. Ken Overberg, a Jesuit priest from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He will be reflecting on the U.S. Bishops’ document entitled Faithful Citizenship. Here is a quote from that document:

#5 This statement highlights the role of the Church in the formation of conscience, and the corresponding moral responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive, and act upon the Church’s teaching in the lifelong task of forming his or her own conscience. With this foundation, Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms, and candidates’ promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world.

Fr. Overberg will be speaking here at St. John on Oct. 26, 6:00-8:00 PM on the principles that we can use in our decisions on voting. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Reflections on the Liturgy: Communion Song III

The Communion Song is important, because it is part of what joins us together in communion with one another during the time we receive Christ’s Body and Blood.  It is communion, not just with Jesus/God, but also with one another.  It’s a startling thought to remember that receiving the Body and Blood of Christ binds us not only with God but with one another, with the rest of the Body of Christ of which we are a small part. Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ requires that we be reconciled with the rest of the body.  That’s why Eucharist is the primary sacrament of reconciliation.

BABYSITTING: we have been trying for several months to get a coordinator and volunteers to continue offering babysitting at the 10:30 Mass. No one has come forward so we will no longer offer it. If there is interest and volunteers in the future we will resume. Please contact Dan Thomas if you have questions or suggestions at 667-3419 or thomasdan@woh.rr.com or in person.
