HOME EUCHARIST

If you are unable to attend mass this week and would like to receive the Eucharist, call the Parish Office at 667-3419 before 3:30 on Friday or call Ann Fallert @ 667-3416 or Lavonne Fleming @ 667-7313 on Saturday and arrangements will be made for home communion.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with those serving our country at this time and with their loved ones at home.  We pray for a safe homecoming and that the world may one day be at peace.

NOTICE – We will not be taking intentions for daily or Sunday mass until further notice.  We have had an unusual number of deaths this year and the mass intentions are more than Father can fulfill this year.  We will only take mass intentions for members of the parish that have passed away recently.

RESPECT LIFE – “Let our daily prayer…bear fruit in the way we lead our lives dna build our families and communities…praying fervently means overcoming every separation between faith and life…”  Pope Benedict XVI April 2008

40 DAYS OF LIFE – Christians throughout Dayton are taking part in a national 40 Days for Life effort, from September 24 through November 2.  This is a continuation of the 40 Days for Life our parish participated in this past January.

We are again looking for volunteers to provide a peaceful presence outside the Women’s Medical Center Abortion Facility, 1401 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, OH, for one or more hours during the 40 days.  Sunday, October 26th has been designated as St. John the Baptist Day and we will be scheduling individuals form our parish for that day.  40 Days for Life provides us with an opportunity to put into action our belif that all life must be respected.

Please contact Judie McKitrick (339-9355) if you are interested in volunteering.  All volunteers are asked to sign a “Statement of Peace” which will be provided to you.  To get additional information on this pro-life event, you can go to:  www.40daysfor life.com.

WE’RE ALL MISSIONARIES – Do you know the date of your Baptism?

Well, on that day, you became a missionary, called by our Lord to share your faith with those around you – and to be part of the Church’s mission to the world.

Jesus Himself directed His followers to go into the whole world and proclaim His Gospel – the “Good News” of His love for us – to all peoples (see Mark 16:15).  That mission is now directed to each one of us.

On World Mission Sunday, we have the opportunity to be part of the Church’s missionary work in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands through our prayers and support offered to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

RCIA UPDATES - Our September 22 RCIA session was on Salvation and Redemption.  We started the meeting with a video entitle “Noise” which showed us how much outside noise is in our every day lives.  Do we make the silent time we need to speak to and listen for answers from God?  How did we deal with the lack of electricity most of us experienced the week before due to the Hurricane?  Did we take advantage of the forced quiet time to connect with God?  Dan Thomas lead the group in a discussion about how God speaks to each of us…birth, death, opportunities, people, the mass, music.  We are told that Jesus died to bring us salvation, what are we being saved from…Hell, envy, greed, anger?  The discussion brought us to the promise of God through his Son that we will all be forgiven, that redemption is within our grasp if we simply ask for it.  Dan shared a story from “The Great Mysteries” by Andrew Greeley which emphases that the Catholic Church tries to emphasis we are basically good but can still misuse our time and talent but that we’re never alone.  It’s not too late to join us!  We’ve changed our meeting night to Mondays in Room # 101 at 7:00pm.  Contact Dan Thomas if you are interested

HOLY HOUR – We are continuing our monthly Holy Hour on the first Tuesday of the month, 7:00-8:00 pm.  The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar during the hour.  Our next Holy Hour is this Tuesday, October 7.

THANKS, KRISTEN!

How Would Jesus Vote, is a presentation by Fr. Ken Overberg, a Jesuit priest from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He will be reflecting on the U.S. Bishops’ document entitled Faithful Citizenship. Here is a short quote that captures its purpose:

#34 Catholics often face difficult choices about how they vote. That is why it is so important to vote according to a well-formed conscience that perceives the proper relationship among moral goods…

Fr. Overberg will be speaking here at St. John on Oct. 26, 6:00-8:00 PM on the principles that we can use in our decisions on voting.

Reflections on the Liturgy: The Communion Procession

Have you ever thought about it that way?  That coming up to receive the Body and Blood of Christ is a procession?  That is what it’s called.  It’s not just getting in line to receive for oneself, but a processing up together in communion with one another.  That is one reason there is a “communion song.”

Adult Faith Formation Coming Attractions:

  • Tatiana in concert Oct. 11, 7:00 PM

·         Fr. Overberg will be speaking here at St. John on Oct. 26, 6:00-8:00 PM.

EVENING ON ANNULMENTS - What’s An Annulment and How Does a Person Get One?” The evening, sponsored by St. Helen and St. Francis parishes, will be presented by Rita Nieport on Wednesday, October 1 at 7 PM at St. Francis Parish.  This information session will address such issues as the procedure for applying for an annulment, and the legitimacy of children born of marriages that are later annulled.  Annulment counselors will be present to answer individual questions.  For more information, call Mary Ellen Singer at 433-0128, or Joan Torres at 254-6233.
